How do I browse and search the dataset catalogue?
Discovery is the entry point to everything else. Learn to page, sort and filter the public dataset catalogue and find the stable table identifier every other endpoint needs.
1. The catalogue endpoint
Every dataset Topolab operates is listed in the catalogue. You can browse it in the app under /datasets, or programmatically with GET /v1/dataset/all. This endpoint is public, needs no authentication, and consumes no credits — it is the entry point for discovery.
You may still send an X-API-Key header (for example to reuse one client configuration) but it is not required and no credits are consumed either way.
curl "https://api.topolab.nl/v1/dataset/all?country=nl&theme=Commerce&sortBy=totalRecords&sortOrder=desc&page=1&limit=2"
2. Page, sort and filter
Use page (1-based, default 1) and limit (default 20, maximum 100) to page. Sort with sortBy — for example title, totalRecords, or modified — and sortOrder (asc or desc). Narrow results with search (free-text over title, description and keywords), theme, and country (ISO code, for example nl).
The response is a paginated envelope: a data array of dataset summaries plus page, limit and total. Keep incrementing page until page * limit >= total.
3. Grab the table identifier
Each summary carries a table (the stable identifier used in every other dataset endpoint), plus title, country, totalRecords, a qualityGrade (letter grade A–F and a numeric score 0–1) and a metadata object with theme, cadence, last-modified date and keywords. Note the table — you will pass it to the detail, sample and download endpoints.
Populate your filters from the APITo fill filter controls or validate a theme before querying, call the public zero-credit helpers GET /v1/dataset/themes (distinct themes in the catalogue) and GET /v1/dataset/industry-codes (industry classification codes for code-driven filtering).
No matches is not an errorA non-matching filter returns an empty data array with total: 0 — never a 404. The only error you should plan for is 429 (rate limited); the catalogue is public, so it never returns 401 or 403.
